Friday, January 23, 2026, 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM ET, University of Tennessee Conference Center, Knoxville, TN

Overview
The goal of this conference is to establish local medical and entomological networks by educating the healthcare community about delusional infestation (DI) and treatment options, and developing a protocol for all professionals affected by this condition, enabling them to work cooperatively to bring those suffering from DI closer to remission. The targeted audience includes dermatologists, primary care physicians, mental health professionals, entomologists, diagnostic laboratory personnel, Extension and pest management professionals. The morning session sets the stage for the afternoon brainstorming sessions. We will describe the efforts of the Southern Region Delusional Infestation Working Group to educate pest management professionals and Extension agents on DI, followed by a further description of the condition and the individual with DI. Next, several specialists (dermatology, immunology, parasitology, and entomology) will describe their efforts to determine if parasites are present. Once parasites are eliminated as the cause of symptoms, we hear from a US-based dermatologist and an international clinical psychiatrist who describe protocols for working with DI. In the afternoon group sessions, we have several prompts to help discussions lead to the formation of local medical and entomological networks to assist those with DI.

  1. Given that a diagnosis of DI within six months of onset leads to quicker recoveries, how can East Tennessee pest management and Extension professionals collaborate with the medical community to assist individuals suspected of having DI?
  2. How can medical specialties (dermatology, primary care, mental health and diagnostic laboratory personnel) assist each other in helping individuals suspected of having DI?
  3. Create a list of professionals prepared to work with DI.
  4. Develop a flow chart of steps starting with pest management and Extension professionals, including all health fields.
