Overview
Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) is a growing public health crisis. In 2024, 129,000 people aged 65 and older lived with AD in Tennessee, and this figure is expected to increase in subsequent years. Studies document that, in 50% or more of primary care patients, dementias are not diagnosed until the disease reaches moderate or advanced stages. With the introduction of new disease modifying agents, indicated for early AD, early and accurate diagnosis of dementia has greater urgency and consequences. This CME course highlights aspects of a recommended clinical work-up in the primary care setting for memory concerns when the suspected etiology is AD or related dementias. Components of the work-up include standardized cognitive testing, blood testing to rule out metabolic or reversible causes of symptoms, genetic testing, information on blood-based biomarkers and information on the disease modifying therapies. Dr. Crane will also highlight pertinent clinical knowledge from her years of practice regarding imaging, cognitive screening, history and physical examination.
