Overview
This course will provide proper death certification education to providers through a recorded lecture format to be available as an enduring material. This is a need that has been identified throughout the Quillen College of Medicine and Mountain Home VA Medical Communities. Proper death certification is an essential function of physician practice and not complying with regulations could potentially impact medical staff membership, and possibly medical license.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Discuss the functions of the death certificate and its importance to the family.
  2. Know the role of the treating physician in death certification.
  3. Describe the TN legal code regarding death certification.
  4. List the 5 manners of death and provide pertinent examples of each.
  5. Discuss the function of the Medical Examiner’s office and their role in natural deaths that occur at home.
  6. Demonstrate completing the Cause of Death statement.
  7. Navigate VRISM: TN’s web-based Vital Record Information System Management.
