Doctor Smyth received his Bachelor of Science and his Master’s of Science in Chemical Engineering prior to attending Medical School at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine at Chapel Hill.  He completed his residency in anesthesiology, specializing in intensive care medicine and cardiothoracic anesthesia at the University of Florida, Gainesville.  He then completed a fellowship in neuro-anesthesiology at Gainesville.  He completed one year as faculty at UF Gainesville prior to entering private practice.

Dr. Smyth began practicing interventional pain management early in his career.  He completed a self-sponsored fellowship (3 months) in medical pain management at Baptist Hospital, Wake Forest University, in Winston-Salem in the mid 1990’s.  When Dr. Smyth moved to Northeast Tennessee in April 2000, he was practicing interventional and medical pain management full time.  As evidence grew indicating the lack of long-term benefit for pain procedures, and especially, the complete absence of evidence of benefit of opioids for chronic pain, Dr. Smyth curtailed his pain practice.  As a witness to the growing opioid crisis, Dr. Smyth recognized the role he and others played in unwittingly contributing to the crisis.  He began a self-motivated mentoring program with local experts to learn how to help those who have become victims of the opioid epidemic.  This quickly grew to an avid pursuit of knowledge, attending live CME courses as well as from the literature and personal interaction with world recognized experts in the field.

Dr. Smyth is board certified by the American Boards of Anesthesiology, Pain Medicine, Addiction Medicine, and Preventive Medicine, subspecialty in Addiction Medicine.  He is the immediate past President of the Tennessee Society of Addiction Medicine.  He is the Medical Director of Catalyst Health Solutions, a Tennessee licensed OBOT clinic.  Dr. Smyth was the first Medical Director for Overmountain Recovery, a not-for-profit OTP jointly sponsored by East Tennessee State University and Ballad Health.  Dr. Smyth also practiced for 3 years in the under-served area of Cherokee, NC at the Cherokee Indian Hospital at their OBOT clinic.  He frequently is asked to speak at conferences on the topic of pain and addiction.  He has given the Tennessee required 2 hour lecture on “Proper Prescribing” to doctors and other practitioners numerous times.
